as beard stick. he called frank stanton head of cbs news into the control room to see the stark disappearance of the candidates. he called ted rogers and said he was satisfied the way nixon looked. that's not the way the rest of the country saw it, when nixon started sweating through that beard stick. the next venue was nbc studios where we produce "hardball." wilson arrived with the kennedy brothers to figure out something was up. someone set the temperature to freezing. felt like a meat locker. jack said, what the hell is this? wilson remembers racing down to the basement looking for the air conditioning unit. there was a guy standing there that ted rogers put there for nixon and he said, don't let anybody change this pip said, get out of the way or i'm going to call the police. he immediately left and i changed the air conditioning back to normal. wilson understand the game and how it was going to be played. the candidates had their jobs to do, so did their handlers. he said his opponent, he said, he wanted to keep his job because of the screw-up that happened in the first de

to bring you in on this, kevin madison with the romney campaign, he was on cbs, he was asked about this tape. let me play it. >> we believe, as a campaign, i think governor romney believes what is most relevant is the president's policies and how they are affecting the economy today, how they are affecting people's bottom line, how they are affecting household incomes. >> does this show a priority list difference, perhaps some of the conservative commentators, chip, wanting to find their a ha moment to get back, i guess, that the 47% video of romney as opposed to what kevin madden says answered the campaign would like to talking about, the priorities getting this economy turned around? is there a divide within conservatives in the party on how to fight back? >> when you are running a campaign and there's other groups doing everything, always doing something else. kevson very smart, keeping it focused on jobs and the economy and the romney campaign. and i think the only a ha is going to matter today about 9:01 when the debate starts and these two guys are on the same stage together.

, was not as aggressive as we would have liked to seen. i have looked at cbs and cnn poll, the president's performance was not as good as governor romney's, i'll stipulate, the president made progress with voters, who has a plan for the next four years, progress on things like who cares about you, even on his leadership dimension. governor romney did better on all of those dimensions. nevertheless the president moved forward with critical voters. in the end the debate is a bump in the road, to borrow one of his expressions but i think that's all it will be. >> do you agree with that, john, that -- go ahead. >> i think this was a bad debate for the president. i think it could be a harbinger of things to come. i think the president was dull. i thought throughout the debate he offered nothing new, gave a lot of the campaign slogans. mitt romney was interesting, very energizeder very active, knew his stuff very well. first time that most voters got a chance to see these two together. i thought that mitt romney did so much better and i think it's going to have an impact on the election. >> tad divine you w
